THE PREDIMED-PLUS TRIAL AWARDED WITH THE PRIZE PAAS 2018
The study “Effect of a lifestyle intervention program with energy-restricted Mediterranean diet and exercise on weight loss and cardiovascular risk factors: One-year results of the PREDIMED-Plus trial” lead by Prof. Jordi Salas-Salvadó in coordination with 23 Spanish research centers has been recently awarded with The PAAS Prizes within the category of Research.
The PAAS (Plan integral para la promoción de la salud mediante la actividad física y la alimentación saludable) Prizes are made available by the Catalan Public Health Agency with the purpose of identifying, recognizing and disseminating those projects and initiatives which have best contributed to reach the PAAS objectives.
The XI Edition of the PAAS took place on the 26th November 2018 at the Caixa Fórum Auditorium Hall in Barcelona, and the Secretary of the Catalan Public Health Agency gave the Award to Dr. Montse Fitó, Dr. Lluís Serra and Dra. Nancy Babio, who attended in representation of The PREDIMED-Plus research team. The PREDIMED-Plus (Prevención con Dieta Mediterránea) trial is a multicenter, controlled and randomized clinical trial, with parallel groups, conducted in 23 Spanish research centers –5 of which are Catalan–, for the primary prevention of cardiovascular disease through an intensive weight-loss intervention with hypocaloric Mediterranean diet and physical activity promotion, in comparison with a control group, among elder adults with high cardiovascular risk. The total duration of The PREDIMED-Plus trial is 6 years of intervention and 2 additional years of follow-up.
The main objective of this pilot study is to evaluate the effectiveness of the PREDIMED-Plus intervention on body weight and other intermediate cardiovascular risk factors after 12 months in 626 participants out of the 1,013 candidates evaluated for inclusion.
The results from this pilot study, awarded in the PAAS Prizes, have been recently published in the journal Diabetes Care in a publication lead by Prof. Jordi Salas-Salvadó, PI of the Human Nutrition Unit at the Rovira i Virgili University and Principal Investigator at the Pere Virgili Health Research Institute (IISPV) and the CIBEROBN. The study was funded by the Institute of Health Carlos III throuht the Fondo de Investigación para la Salud, a co-found made available by the European Regional Development Fund.
